About Sarah Leffler, MSW, LCSW
I received my BA from the University of Virginia with a major in Anthropology and a minor in Psychology. I then earned my Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from Washington University in St. Louis in 2005.
I completed a rigorous training program in Advanced Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute in 2007. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy helps people explore how their past relationships and experiences (especially with primary care-takers) affect their current emotions, behaviors, and relationships. Psychodynamic psychotherapy also places value on the relationship between the therapist and client as a vehicle for exploration and growth.
I have advanced training in trauma treatment, having completed a program in trauma treatment through the Ferentz Institute in 2009. I also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, which is an accelerated evidence-based approach to resolving trauma. My approach to trauma treatment is de-pathologizing, strengths-based, and focused on the mind-body connection.
In addition to these intensive training programs and my certification in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, I have completed courses in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I weave CBT techniques into my work because it can be helpful with symptom resolution.
Before opening my private practice, I worked in community mental health, at an addiction treatment facility, and in more traditional social work settings providing comprehensive, holistic treatment to the disadvantaged population.
I welcome people from all walks of life into my practice.
